Supervisors meetings today in Charlotte and Mecklenburg counties; Albemarle Board to hold second budget work session
Another installment of what's coming up in meetings of local government across Virginia's Fifth District
This is an experimental newsletter that seeks to preview all of the various meetings of elected officials coming up in Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District. The goal is for me to learn more about how these places work. I’ve written about Albemarle and Charlottesville for years and I needed to branch out a bit. Hence, this newsletter!
There’s much more to come this week, but I’m slightly distracted by a family move so tomorrow’s installment may be a lot more brief than usual. Here’s what I’ll be working on for tomorrow’s edition:
Campbell County Board of Supervisors (maybe - check)
Goochland Board of Supervisors work session (check here)
Lynchburg City Council (meeting page)
Cumberland County Board of Supervisors (meeting page)
Nelson County Board of Supervisors
Prince Edward County Board of Supervisors (meeting page)
Charlotte County Supervisors meet this afternoon
My favorite thing about the packet for the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors is that whoever puts it together always adds a nice seasonal image. This time around it’s St. Patrick’s Day. (agenda packet)
The meeting is today at 1:30 p.m in the county administration building. The meeting begins with a call to order, an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and approval of the final agenda and recent minutes.
From the minutes of the February 7, 2023 meeting, we learn that the Charlotte County Rescue Squad is having difficulty making payroll for its three full time crews. Legislation passed the General Assembly to form a work group to study this issue. Take a look at HB2175. I cannot stress the importance of good minutes to increase transparency.
After the public comment period, there will be a report from the Virginia Department of Transportation. After that, an update on broadband expansion through the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) from Empower Broadband.
There will also be a presentation on the accreditation for the Sheriff’s Department from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission.
Then the Board of Supervisors will take action on a real estate tax abatement for spouses of people killed in the line of duty. That’s followed by additional action on a public safety ordinance to officially authorize the new position of Public Safety Director.
They will then schedule three public hearings for future meetings for three communications towers and a satellite dish.
Then a segment on the 200th anniversary of the Courthouse.
There will be a closed session on potential litigation related to the August 2022 decision to impose a moratorium on utility-scale solar facilities.
Mecklenburg County Supervisors meet this evening
The nine-member Board of Supervisors in Mecklenburg County will meet today at 7:30 p.m. The agendas are posted in advance but not the meeting packet. (meeting portal)
After a resolution honoring the late Supervisor Glanzy Spain Jr., who died in late December., there will be two public hearings. One is for a special exception permit for a recreational vehicle park. The other is for a special exception permit to hold weddings and “children’s outdoors adventures” on a property.
There will be amendments to the county’s ordinance on solar facilities and the Comprehensive Plan.
Then updates from VDOT, the tourism office, and the economic development committee. There will also be a resolution on the relocation of polling places for Precinct 103 and Precinct 901. Then lots of updates. It would be nice to see all of these in the packet.
Still, all of the meetings in Mecklenburg County are available on YouTube.
Budget work session in Albemarle
Albemarle County will continue its review of the recommended $551.5 million budget with a second work session. The previous one was last Wednesday. They meet in Room 241 of the county office building at 401 McIntire Road in Charlottesville. (meeting info)
This time they will go through the budget for Albemarle Public Schools, discuss the Capital Improvement Program, and debt management.
