Nottoway Supervisors to consider Virginia Business Ready Grant
Plus: Articles from other publications across Virginia's Fifth District
This is the first edition of the Fifth District Community Engagement newsletter to be written on a train. I’m on board the Northeast Regional heading up to visit my family in Pennsylvania. The wi-fi works, so it’s time to write up the final edition this week of this experiment to write about what’s happening at meetings of elected officials.
This particular one is fairly spare because I’m distracted by the scenery. I’ve never taken this journey on a train before, though I’ve recently taken this service to get from Charlottesville to Lynchburg and I hope to do that frequently. We live in a beautiful part of the world and it thrills me to see the landscape change without having to worry about driving.
Nottoway Supervisors meet tonight
The five-member Board of Supervisors in Nottoway County meet at 7 p.m. in the Nottoway County General District Courtroom at 328 W. Courthouse Road in Nottoway.
The meeting begins with the Call to Order, the Invocation, and the Pledge of Allegiance. Then there will be an approval of the agenda followed by the approval of the minutes for August 16 and September 21.
There are no public hearings for this meeting.
There will be a presentation from Ricky Rash of the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District.
There will be several reports from various departments and Constitutional officers.
There are several items under “unfinished business.”
These include an update on the animal shelter, an issue with the Nottoway water line, a boundary line adjustment with the Town of Crewe, a subdivision vacation, and employee compensation.
The proposed shelter has gone through the value engineering process and a total of $486,938 in savings have been identified. Nottoway Cares has raised a total of $488,727.39 and there is $75,000 worth of land being donated for the facility.
There are several items under new business. One of them is a pre-application for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership’s Virginia Business Ready Sites Program. Supervisors will be briefed on options to proceed for grant funding. Nottoway would receive a 3 to 1 return on any funding it offers as a match.
“Nottoway County is identified as a ‘double-distressed’ locality given our unemployment rates are higher than the state average rate and that poverty levels exceed the state average,” writes Gregg Zody, the Planning and Economic Development Director.
Zody is recommending a site evaluation grant.
