March 24, 2025: Meetings today in Bedford County and Powhatan County
Plus: The Campbell County Board of Supervisors takes a tour of Brookville High School
This relaunched edition of the Fifth District Community Engagement newsletter will have some examples like today where the entries are very small. Monday is a deadline day for C-Ville Weekly and my morning was spent putting this week’s column together. I’m adding a second story each week, which may further test my ability to do this work.
And it’s a fun challenge!
In any case, let’s get going:
Powhatan County Supervisors to set tax rate for 2025, hold public hearing on
I’ll wait until the next Powhatan County entry to give statistics on the locality but I can tell you that the Board of Supervisors eats dinner together before their regular meeting according to their agenda. They meet in the Village Building at 5 p.m. for a pre-meeting and an overview of a department. This time is the Powhatan Public Library. (agenda)
The regular meeting begins at 6 p.m. Today’s packet is 123 pages long. (view the packet)
There are three public hearing items.
The first is for a rezoning request sought by Luckstone to change a 15.2 acre parcel from Heavy Industrial to Mining and Mineral Extraction. This would also remove a restriction against blasting. (page 39 of the packet)
The second is on the tax rates for Calendar Year 2025. The amount is not given in the resolution. (page 116)
The third is for a technical amendment to the zoning code to remove the definition of “Lot, Flag.” (page 118)
The Board of Supervisors will next meet on March 27 for a work session.
Bedford County to review fund for nursing home
Only about half of Bedford County is within Virginia’s Fifth Congressional District, but that’s enough to get covered in this newsletter. The seven-member Board of Supervisors will meet at 5 p.m. for a budget work session followed by a regular session at 7 p.m. You can download the materials at this website
During the budget work session, there will be presentations on the solid waste fund as well as the fund that runs the county-owned nursing home. There will also be a discussion of new personnel that may be funded in the FY2026 budget.
There are two public hearings related to elections. One is on changes to precinct locations and the other is on a waiver to allow for two precincts that have have two different Congressional districts.
More detail next time, I swear.
Campbell County Board of Supervisors to tour Brookville High School
I am a graduate of Brookville High School and the year after I left there were renovations and I didn’t recognize the place when I went back to visit. Over thirty years later, another renovation is under way and today the Board of Supervisors will take a look. This begins at 4:30 p.m. and I wish I could attend. They’ll join the School Board on this tour.
The $47 million project is being led by Blairs Construction, as we learn in an October 2023 article in the Altavista Journal.
Campbell County Supervisors also meet tomorrow. More on that next time.
