Just a short one today. Lunenburg County coming up later on today!
The seven-member Board of Supervisors in Hanover County meets at 2 p.m. today for their regular meeting (2 p.m. meeting overview)
The meeting begins in the usual fashion with a call to order, the invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, consideration of amendments to the agenda, and the comment period for Supervisors and staff, there will be two presentations.
The first is a proclamation for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Accepting will be LeAnna Headley, the founder and executive director of Our Amazing Fighters. That’s a group that raises funds to support children with pediatric cancer as well as their families. (read the proclamation)
The second is a presentation on Hanover County’s recertification of a Certified Crime Prevention Community. (staff report)
After that there will be Citizens’ Time and adoption of the consent agenda, there are three more presentations.
One is from Whitney Whalen, the executive director of Hanover CARES, an organization that seeks to eliminate drug, alcohol, and nicotine use in the youth. (staff report)
The second is an update from Hanover County Superintendent Dr. Michael Gill.
The third is an update on the master plan for the Hanover County Airport that is currently in development. The last one was adopted in 2002.
Then there will be a recess followed by two public hearings, both of which are county-related.
The first is a specific Comprehensive Plan amendment on the addition of a new school complex in eastern Hanover County on U.S. Route 360.
“The Board of Supervisors and the School Board have been searching for a site that would be adequate for the replacement of Mechanicsville High School and Bell Creek Middle School,” reads the staff report.
Hanover County is under contract to purchase 100 acres of land but the Comprehensive Plan has to be updated to accommodate a future zoning request. The Planning Commission recommended approval unanimously on August 10.
Next there is an update on the Envision Hanover update of the Comprehensive Plan. This process has been underway since June 2021. This update does not change the boundaries of the Suburban Service Area and maintains the 70 percent / 30 percent split between SSA and rural area.
There are proposed name changes to the land use designations as well as several specific changes at specific locations. In the Ashland District, this involves re-designating a lot of industrial land to suburban neighborhood residential.
