Hanover Airport seeking change to location for on-site events; Pittsylvania Supervisors to get first look at FY24 budget
Plus: Albemarle Supervisors to hold public hearing on FY2024 budget
Three quick stories today. Don’t forget to read through the links to stories being written by journalists throughout the Fifth District. I’ll have one more of these out on Wednesday.
Hanover Supervisors to hold six land use public hearings, get tax relief recommendations
The seven-member Board of Supervisors in Hanover County will meet at 4:30 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Department Firing Range at 7236 Courtland Farm Road in Hanover. There they will get a demonstration from the department before recessing to the Board Room. (meeting info)
They’ll reconvene at 6 p.m.
There will be two regular public hearings. The first will be to receive nominations for the Beaverdam and Henry magisterial districts. A vote will be taken at the May 24 meeting.
The second will be on the tax relief program for the elderly and disabled and recommendations for enhancements. Staff’s recommendation will be made at this time. I’m actually not entire sure if this is a public meeting or not. I have a lot to learn.
There are six planning public hearings:
A landowner of land zoned Agricultural-1 on Whippoorwill Road seeks a special exception to build a foot four-car garage. Technically these would be two unattached 24’ by 31’ buildings to store the property owner’s tractor and boat. (Ashland District)
A landowner of land zoned Heavy Industrial (M-3) on Leadbetter Road in the Hanover Industrial Air Park seeks a special exception for a fence to be higher than four feet. This will either be for a driving school or a contractor’s storage yard. (Ashland District)
The Hanover County Airport seeks a special exception to have outdoor promotional activities on certain parcels. A previous special exception granted in 2009 does not apply to a new area of the property where they want to hold activities. The first one planned is the Chick-Fil-A Cowdrop scheduled for May 13. Three thousand people are estimated to attend. (Ashland District)
A landowner of land zoned Agricultural-1 on Peaks Road seeks a special exception to build a contractor’s storage yard. This is to allow storage of two tractor-trailers used in the applicant’s trucking business. A zoning violation has been given and this would bring the situation into compliance. (Beaverdam District)
A landowner seeks an amendment to a previously approved rezoning to change the conceptual plan and proffers. Grandma Mitchell’s Place LLC wants to be able to allow for self-storage warehouses and vehicle storage. (Beaverdam District)
A couple seeks a rezoning of 52.4 acres from A-1 to Agricultural Residential District to allow for six building lots for a gross density of 1 dwelling unit per 8.73 acres. (Henry District)
Pittsylvania County Supervisors to be presented with budget for FY2024
The seven-member Board of Supervisors in Pittsylvania County usually meets on Tuesday, but meet this Wednesday for a special meeting to be presented with the budget for the fiscal that begins on July 1. They meet in the Board Meeting Room at 39 Bank Street SE in Chatham. (meeting packet)
None of the information is available in advance. The budget will be legally authorized on May 3 with a public hearing scheduled for May 16.
If you want to get ready, you can review the materials for the current fiscal year which ends on June 30.
Albemarle Supervisors to hold budget public hearing for FY24 budget
Last week, Albemarle Supervisors held the final work session for the development of a budget for FY24. A Google News search shows no ongoing coverage of this document which funds the government of a community of over 115,000. I’ve written a handful of stories but wanted to write more. Everything I’ve written on this topic can be found here.
The combined operating and capital budget recommended by County Administrator Jeffrey Richardson was $551,461,538. At 6 p.m. Supervisors will gather in Lane Auditorium for a public hearing on the budget and a second public hearing on the various tax rates. I don’t seem to be able to find a list of significant changes. I will follow-up before Wednesday for a story.
One resource is a lot of all of the various presentations from the various work sessions. I know what I would assign a reporter if I had access to one. I used to work for an organization that used to cover this stuff, but quit when I was told no one wanted coverage like this.
