Election round-up: Dooley will try again in Bedford District 6; Currin challenging Edmonds in Lunenburg District 6
Another look at who is seeking to make decisions in localities across Virginia's Fifth District
One topic this time, and that’s a bulleted list of various people running for office in the Fifth District. All of the information comes from the Virginia Department of Elections’ website.
Do read on to the end for a list of various articles written by my colleagues in journalism across the Fifth District. There is a lot happening and the point of this experimental newsletter is to share as much information as I can.
Supervisor races:
Andrew Dooley has filed to run in Bedford County’s District 6. Dooley won the Republican primary in 2015 and went on to win the general election in an uncontested race that November. In 2019, he lost to Robert Wesley Davis in a close race with Davis getting 51.4 percent of the vote.
Ann Mallek is running for a fifth term on the Albemarle Board of Supervisors to represent the White Hall District. I wrote about her kick-off campaign.
Independent Gregory Currin is mounting a challenge for District 6 in Lunenburg County. That seat has been held by Democrat Alvestor Edmonds since at least 2003. He’s only faced opposition once before and that was in 2011 when he received 74 percent of the vote.
Republican Ken Bowman has filed to run for the Chatham-Blairs District on the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors. That seat is currently held by Robert Wayne Warren.
John Hinkle has filed to run for re-election to the Falling River District on the Appomattox Board of Supervisors. In 2019, Hinkle defeated incumbent Chad Everett Miller with 54.7 percent of the 1,218 votes cast.
Independent Laura Harvey Briceland has filed to challenge Hinkle.
Republican M. Travis Crown has filed to run for the Ashland District on the Hanover Board of Supervisors. The seat is currently held by Faye Oliff Prichard who ran unopposed in 2019 and received 97.2 percent of the 3,899 votes cast.
Republican Ken Wolfskill has filed to run in the Appomattox River District on the Appomattox Board of Supervisors. The seat is currently held by Independent William Harvey Hogan who was first elected in 2015 with 253 out of 281 votes cast. In 2019 he won with 1,053 of 1,059 votes cast.
Trevor Hipps has filed to run for reelection in the Wreck Island District. He defeated incumbent Bryan Ashley Moody with 808 votes to 324 votes.
Independent James Schoenster has filed to run in the Palmyra District on the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors. The seat is currently held by Patricia Eager who has held the seat since the 2015 election.
Independent Steve Barham has filed to run for the District 3 seat on the Powhatan Board of Supervisors. The seat is currently held by Michael Wade Byerly who received 97.2 percent of the 2,000 votes cast.
School Board races:
Goochland County’s School Board boundaries were changed with redistricting. Ellen Robinson has filed to run in District 5.
Joann McDermid has filed to run for the White Hall seat on the Albemarle School Board currently held by Rebecca Berlin. Berlin was appointed to the position last year to fill a vacancy left when David Oberg resigned.
Allison Spillman has filed to run for the at-large seat on the Albemarle County School Board. Spillman had applied for the interim position when Oberg resigned. (campaign website)
Kathy Coffee has filed to run for re-election in District 6 on the Lunenburg County School Board. She was first elected in 2007 and received 53 percent of the vote.
Ellen Osborne has filed to run for re-election in the Scottsville District of the Albemarle County School Board. She was elected in 2019 in an uncontested race.
Constitutional officers:
Rusty McGuire has filed to run for re-election as Commonwealth’s Attorney in Louisa County. McGuire was first elected in 2011 and has never faced opposition at the polls.
Nancy Collins Rowe has filed to run for Treasurer in Mecklenburg County. Sandra Langford has held that position since 2007 when she won a close race with 51.4 percent of the vote. Since then she never faced a candidate at the ballot box.
Marilyn Wilson has been Clerk of Court in Amelia County since at least 2007 when she won with 63.2 percent of the vote. She won reelection in 2015 with no opposition and has now filed again for another term.
Ricky Walker has filed to run again for Sheriff in Amelia County. He was first elected in 2007 and has always faced opposition on the ballot.
Darnell Herman Barksdale has filed to run for Sheriff in Halifax County. Fred Scott Clark has held the position since his election in 2011. He’s faced opposition each year and in 2019 received 8,629 of the 10,159 votes cast.
