Danville City Council has light agenda with several items related to Old Town Residential zoning
The second of two installments this week of this look at what's happening in local governments in the Fifth District
There’s only one item in this second look this week at meetings. Things will resume more in earnest next week.
The nine members of the Danville City Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the municipal building. I can’t link you directly to the agenda or the packet, but you should be able to access those on the city’s meeting portal at this link.
The meeting begins with approval of 15 different appointments ranging from the reappointment of Stephen Daniel as a member of the Airport Commission to Rhonda Spraggins to serve on the Transportation Advisory Committee.
There are several items under new business. The first is a public hearing on a special use permit for the owner of 162 Howeland Circle to operate a short-term rental at that location. This building was constructed in 1932 and is in Old Town Residential District zoning.
The second is a public hearing for a short-term rental at 122 Benefield Street. This structure was built in 1920 and is also in the Old Town Residential District.
The third item is a public hearing for a special use permit to operate a duplex at 491 West Main Street. The property is currently in violation as the Old Town Residential District only allows single family homes. The Department of Community Development knows this because of a noise complaint received earlier this year.
The fourth item is for eight blocks away for a special use permit for a mixed use development at 1224 West Main Street with residential on the upper levels and commercial on the street.
“The street level of 1224 West Main Street contains three (3) active commercial store fronts; the upper level is currently vacant,” reads the staff report from Renee Burton, the director of planning. “The applicant states that the upper level was historically used as apartments.”
The fifth is a public hearing for a request to amend the zoning code to amend the height and size of flagpoles that are allowed. I’m vaguely aware of something that precipitated this entry. Do you know?
The work session takes place as soon as the regular meeting concludes but they move up to the 4th floor conference room. On this agenda are two items related to vacating alleyways. There will also be an update on economic development.
