Comprehensive Plan workshop in Cumberland tonight; Food pantry up for vote in Lunenburg
Another quick look at what’s happening in local government in the Fifth District
It turns out that Amelia County’s Board of Supervisors doesn’t meet tomorrow, but on July 19. I keep a spreadsheet that helps me track what body meets when, but sometimes I mark down something incorrect. So today’s installment covers Cumberland and Lunenburg, two of the smaller localities in the Fifth District. I really do hope to visit some day with a microphone and interview as many people as I can.
Until then, here’s the latest installment.
Cumberland Supervisors to hold workshop on Comprehensive Plan
The five member Board of Supervisors in Cumberland County meets at 6 p.m. tonight. They meet at 17 Courthouse Circle in Cumberland. (meeting packet)
The meeting begins with a workshop on the Comprehensive Plan. The most recent plan was adopted in 2013. (view the current plan)
Cumberland County has the smallest population of any locality in the Fifth District. The most recent population projections produced by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service show that declining through 2030 and 2040 before rebounding to 9.683 in the year 2050.
The existing conditions report for the plan notes that there could be pressure from neighboring counties as they continue to grow.
“Cumberland’s Comprehensive Plan is important because it will guide decision-making to ensure that future development is in line with the plan,” reads the comprehensive plan website. “It helps the County prioritize the allocation of limited resources, inform where new land uses should go, which areas of the county should change, and which should stay the same.”
The regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. After the call to order, there will be comments from the county administrator followed by reports from various departments and agencies. There’s not a lot of detail as the full packet isn’t online.
Food pantry to go before Lunenburg Board of Supervisors
The seven member Board of Supervisors in Lunenburg County meets Thursday at 6 p.m. (meeting packet)
After an invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance, conflict of interest statements, organizational matters, and the citizen comment period there will be two public hearings.
The first is an amendment to the FY23-24 budget that’s in excess of one percent of the total budget. This is related to $1.43 million in additional school construction funding.
The second is for a conditional use permit for Community Resource Services for a community center. The use will be a food pantry.
There will be a supplemental appropriation for FY23 for the Lunenburg County School Board. The additional $200,000 is for additional meals for children attending summer school.
The county attorney will given an update on the temporary hiatus for applications for utility-scale solar projects.
