Changes to proposed Enterprise Zone go before public hearing in Lunenburg County tonight
Plus: Stories from newspapers across the Fifth District
In the past two weeks, I’ve adopted a system where the reading material focuses on the same counties that are being featured in that edition. This helps me think about each place’s identity a little bit more. I can imagine this being a fully-staffed beat one day.
But this time around, I’ve posted what I can from all over the district from the last few days. There are a lot of stories about public school accreditation in the southern localities. I don’t see any for the northern ones, which makes me think there’s an opportunity to tell that story over at Charlottesville Community Engagement.
Thanks for reading this experimental newsletter and please share it with anyone you think might be interested in learning more about what’s happening at the local level.
Two public hearings in Lunenburg County tonight
The seven-member Board of Supervisors in Lunenburg County meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Lunenburg Courts Building at 160 Courthouse Square in Lunenburg. (meeting packet)
The usual start to a meeting in Lunenburg is the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by requests to make any additions to the agenda. Then there will be statements of potential conflicts of interest and then the citizen comment period.
There will be a resolution to salute the Lunenburg Girls’ Softball Debs Division All-Stars. They recently won the State Championship in a 9-team tournament in Powhatan. They went on to play in the World Series in Alexandria, Louisiana.
There is a second resolution to salute the Lunenburg County Youth Baseball Coach Pitch All-Stars for winning a state championship and for representing Virginia in the Dixie Youth World Series in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
There is a third resolution to honor the Lunenburg County Baseball Minor League All-Stars for winning the State Championship and for representing Virginia in the Dixie Youth World Series in Ruston, Louisiana.
There is a four resolution recognizing the Lunenburg County Baseball Major League All-Stars for winning the State Championship and for winning the Dixie Youth World Series in Ruston, Louisiana. They outscored their opponents 62 to 18, according to the resolution!
There are two public hearings.
One is an amendment to the ordinance for the siting of wireless telecommunications facilities. This was crafted by a special committee. If I had more time today, I’d be curious to know if this is a new ordinance or an amendment of an old one. Albemarle County is reviewing the ordinance at this time. The Planning Commission there reviewed the work to date in July, as I reported at the time.
The second is related to the Lunenburg-Kenbridge-Victoria Enterprise Zone and an amendment to the eligibility requirements as well as to end consideration of a program to waive business license fees. The latter was a request from the towns who did not want to lose out on a revenue source. There had been a previous public hearing on an earlier version of this amendment in February, but the public notice states that the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development wanted a fresh one.
There will be various reports to close out the meeting as well as a discussion on the local ordinance that regulates exhaust fumes from vehicles.
